Farmers’ Market – Last Farmers Market in the Mall raised about $950.00., $650.00 for sausage sales and $300.00 for marshalling. A great result and thanks to the regular volunteers as well as the extra marshallers. Don’t have results of this week’s market at the Lake.

Community Market – Raised $275.55. – Workshop $215.95 and bbq $60.60. Just a little bit better than last month. The number of members setting up and working on the day was down. I know it’s been raised before but being able to help every couple of months might allow one of the regulars to have a day off. Like next month on October 12 which has nothing to do with Bathurst. Just a co-incidence

IGA Supermarket and Haintz Pharmacy – These two businesses support BECS by a token scheme at (IGA) and a rebate on prescriptions at (Haintz). Members and their families are encouraged to support these businesses. Both these businesses continue to add small amounts to our bank account.

Safety FirstNew Members – We have had a number of new members join in recent days. Please make them welcome and get to know them. Many have interesting stories to tell. It is encouraging to see new members actively involved and taking the initiative in projects.

For new members we have an O H & S induction process which is run by Ron L. If you refer to the photo you will observe a representative BECS worker with his compliant sun safe headware, compliant ear protection, his compliant eye protection, his compliant steel capped work boots and his compliant “LUKE DARCY” safety gloves.

BBQ Helpers – Thank you to all who have helped on the bbq’s this month. We appreciate the regular volunteers but for newer members please put your hand up to help as this might enable someone else to have a week off. The bbq trailer is one of our most successful money making ventures and our good reputation has been gained through the hard work of this small group of volunteers. We also need volunteers for our monthly market. This is not a difficult job as it often only entails just keeping an eye on things. The bbq team are planning to set up a table and chairs for people to sit and eat and hopefully will be underway with the finer weather.

The bbq trailer has been sign written by Robert Young Signs. Thanks Robert for a great job and also for the signs on the ute. Members have commented how good they look.

New BECS clothing – We have a new supply of shirts, jackets, hats etc. Please see Denis C if you are interested in ordering some of these items.

Coates Hire - BBQ as ThanksTHUMBS UP FOR COATES HIRE Thanks to Alan B, Andrew K, Paul T and John E for putting on a bbq lunch for Coates Hire in appreciation of use of a scissor lift to repair Nissen hut roof.

Wet Area upgrade – Is progressing well. We had an external electrician install a new switchboard on the outside wall of the rec room. This is the main switch board for the site. He also wired up the new wood lathe and the surface grinder in the metal area. It also allows for the future wiring of the Nissen hut. This has cost more than we budgeted but we have also achieved more. John H has finished plastering, Doug S has installed cement sheet and started tiling. We are using left over tiles that Graeme M obtained for the toilet block which is a saving.

Surface GrinderWorkshop – This month has been very busy, even having to knock back a couple of jobs. Plaques for the Light Car Club have been completed. Thanks to Lynton and Ray for this work. They have also been working on some display trays for a local business. See photo. We have repaired another chair and Bob D (he doesn’t like posing for his photo ) has made a post box for a podiatrist. The box is set up at the other end of a room and they get kids to post a letter and observe how they walk. We are also making more calve stretches. The foot ones not the animals. Another job is a joker poker board for a fire brigade cricket club and a table base.

In the metal work shop John T has been setting up the new surface grinder. Sadly he tells me it is not big enough to do engine blocks. Speaking of engine blocks, thanks to Graham R and Alan D for showing me how easy it is to break easy-outs. Work on the trailer has slowed a little but the gas has had a good work out. How did we survive for so long without it!

Tanya Daniels - Thanks to TANIA DANIELS –THE GOOD GUYS who put our Men’s Shed name up to be a recipient of their in store raffle. $73.00 has been banked as we were a winner.

Grass cutting – Thanks Ray and Marj D for cutting the grass a couple of times. You will be twice as quick when your back is fine Ray.

Visits - We have had a visit from a number of men from the new Sebastopol Men’s Shed. We wish them well as they go through all the teething issues of getting a new shed up and running. Talking of this we wish Buninyong Men’s Shed all the best as they plan their official opening next month. Hopefully a few of us will be able to attend. Sale Men’s Shed are planning to visit us on Thursday 9 October. For those interested in going to the VMSA AGM it will be held on Friday 24 October at Brighton This is the start of the annual Melbourne Working With Wood Show which goes onto October 26

McCains Food Tasting – By the time you read this we should have completed our five weeks. We thank all our members who have participated. More particularly we thank the partners, family and friends who have given up their precious time to assist us in this major fund raising effort for BECS We also thank the Sebas Men’s Shed who took one time slot and Buninyong who filled vacancies. So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

Committee - We welcome back John V M from his overseas trip. We hope you had a good time catching up with family and friends.

Working Bee - Held a couple of weeks ago for the purpose of cleaning up the back yard so we can install a retaining wall, install some fill and profile the car park. Thanks to Andrew for lunch and every one who cut up wood and steel and moved wood further down the block. Although I didn’t see it, they claim spontaneous combustion made the fire smoke. This was the explanation given to the council worker as the fire had been going for two days without a problem.

Ballarat Holden - We are saving the best for last. The official hand over of the Rodeo twin cab ute by Ballarat Holden dealer principal Scott Moysey to BECS president Doug Jenkins. A very generous donation and I’m sure all BECS members would wish to pass on their thanks. Our desire is that the use of this ute will better able the Men’s Shed to improve the health and well being of men in our community. We also thank Fairfax Media and The Ballarat Courier for permission to use the image.
