Farmers’ Market –The last 3 Farmers Markets have raised $658.00., $573.30 and $440.85, as well as 3 Power FM bbqs. A great result and thanks to the regular volunteers as well as the extra marshallers. Don’t have results of this week’s market at the Lake.

Community Market – Raised $281 very much the same as the last 2 . The number of members setting up and working on the day was down. I know it’s been raised before but being able to help every couple of months might allow one of the regulars to have a day off.

IGA Supermarket and Haintz Pharmacy – These two businesses support BECS by a token scheme at (IGA) and a rebate on prescriptions at (Haintz). Members and their families are encouraged to support these businesses. Both these businesses continue to add small amounts to our bank account.

New Members – We have had a number of new members join in recent days. Please make them welcome and get to know them. Many have interesting stories to tell. It is encouraging to see new members actively involved and taking the initiative in projects.

This Years CHRISTMAS FUNCTION Will be held on Wednesday December 3 at Ballarat Golf Club, 1800 Sturt St Near Arch of Victory. Please put this date in your diaries and this event is for members, wives and partners. We also hope for another musical performance.

LATE BREAKING NEWS - BECS has been successful in receiving a VMSA grant funded by the Victorian Government for shed refurbishment. The grant is for $30,000.00 and our contribution will be $15,000.00 making the total project $45,000.00. The project is to reglaze the nissen hut to weatherproof it, install 3 phase power and lighting to the nissen hut and main workshop, make and erect partition walls and shelving units. Our labour can be costed as part of our contribution but we will still need a small cash contribution. The end result should be safer working environment, a dedicated and dust free space for the metal workers and expansion of the wood working area to allow more work stations and perhaps have more woodwork equipment set up and ready to use, and finally have a more usable and accessible storage area. Some of these broad objectives might change but the end result will be the biggest change to BECS workshop since we started in 2006. The other thing is that we can no longer claim that we have not had any Government support, but I’m sure we can make this little sacrifice compared to the ultimate improvement to the shed.

BBQ Helpers – Thank you to all who have helped on the bbq’s this month. We appreciate the regular volunteers but for newer members please put your hand up to help as this might enable someone else to have a week off. The bbq trailer is one of our most successful money making ventures and our good reputation has been gained through the hard work of this small group of volunteers. The bbq team are planning to set up a table and chairs for people to sit and eat and hopefully will be underway with the finer weather. The extra bbq’s we have taken on for 3BA and Power FM has been great financially but it has meant a greater load for the bbq team. Thanks guys. Picture from recent bbq at JCB in Carnham road with use of their gazebo’ I know computers have a mind of their own but why should these two photos import upside down xxjsxxxxxex The easiest solution is to stand on your head to view them.

New BECS clothing – We have a new supply of shirts, jackets, hats etc. Please see Denis C if you wish purchase some items.

Wet Area Upgrade – Is just about complete. A huge vote of thanks needs to go to Doug S for completing the tiling; altered the cabinetry and working with the plumber from Sleeps Plumbing . All that is left is to install architraves with help of John H , install some more drawers and notice board and set up the cupboards. Men this is a great improvement on the old wet area, so please keep it clean and tidy. Lastly the hot water unit can be left turned on.

CONGRATULATIONS To Mal and Alison’s youngest daughter Samantha who has won an Order Of Australia Association Award for community and volunteer work. Only one person per secondary school so well done Samantha.

Back Yard Cleanup. - A second working bee has been held to complete the cleanup. The smaller material that is left will be buried under the clean fill to be brought in. Will be an interesting dig site in 100 years as some archaeologist tries to work out what was happening on the site. Thanks to everyone who helped on the day and Andrew who again supplied lunch with the lot. You had to be there to know what that means!

Grass cutting – Thanks Ray and Marj D for cutting the grass a couple of times. You will be twice as quick when your back is fine Ray. Ray has also reported some fuel contamination problems with the mower and brushcutter.

Visits - For those interested in going to the VMSA AGM it will be held on Friday 24 October at Brighton . Please see me if you are interested. This is also the start of the annual Melbourne Working With Wood Show which goes onto October 26.

WORKSHOP - Both the wood and metal areas have been busy this month. We have rejected a couple of jobs because we don’t have the time or manpower. We have been asked to quote on a couple of seat units for Langi Kal Kal. We need to restock our pencil case stocks for the childrens wonderfest activity on Sunday November 2 and we will need helpers for this day. We need to finish painting and replace missing wheels on the Christmas trees for the Bridge Mall, by mid November

Photo board for A&P Ballarat Show Society The cow looks contented but not sure about the milkmaid and Ray with another batch of calve stretchers.

Neale making a tank stand for Alan B. The hand painting is for the dogs and chooks to look at! It also took six blokes to carry it.

Work on the trailer continues. Graham M making his 357th piece of furniture.

Lynton finishing display boxes for Spring Hill Farms for which we got a great report. Ron giving the new lathe a workout on a biro and a jigaroo for a boat which allows the mast to lay down

From Moyle who is in WA for the A Model Ford National Rally. I don’t know if you could drink the water after a Land Rover parked on your roof!

Whats the point?

Have had a number of members wanting to question the point of this back hoe seen at JCB bbq. It makes perfect sense to me. A supercharged 761 cubic inch big block with zoomie headers, capable of 160 kph and can do the quarter mile on its back wheels faster than most road cars. Looks and sounds great. Who wouldn’t be impressed. Look it up on the internet.

QUIZ

Please match names to members cars and bikes which were either their first car or bike or significant at that time. Some photos are a bit blurry but that happens when the camera of the day was a box brownie.
