Farmers/Community Market

Market at the lake raised $100.00.

Community market at the shed raised $150.00.  The weather was the problem. When we look back in 12 months time we need to know the temperature didn’t get over 6 degrees and it was wet. At the community market we had a stall by The SES talking about flood mitigation. How appropriate !
The last Bridge Mall market raised about  $700.00 plus $300.00 for Marshalls.  Another  top result.

IGA SUPERMARKET & HAINTZ PHARMACY.

These two businesses support BECS by a token scheme at IGA and a rebate on prescriptions at Haintz. Members and their families are encouraged to support these businesses and in effect contributing to our fundraising. If you shop at one of the other IGA stores then collect the tokens and we can take them to the collection tins. Likewise consider signing up at Haintz as we are all in the high prescription user group.
NEW MEMBERS
We keep harping on about welcoming new members. By doing this there is every opportunity for them to be long term contributing members. . If you are out and about then don’t miss the opportunity to ask what men are up to.  Question. How do you become an old member of BECS?  Answer.  Start by being a new member and hanging around.

BECS CLOTHING

For  all your polos, shirts, jumpers, vests , hats and beanies see  Denis C

SHED WRAPPING.

As a safety consideration for the Job Ready scheme we needed to cover any broken asbestos on the buildings. The simple solution was to cover the damaged areas with the aluminium boards. Thanks to Allan D, Paul T , Rob F and others who helped. We now have a giant white board and a small black board.

OLD TRADES EXHIBITION.
Keep Saturday 8 August and Sunday 9 August free to visit this
Display in Dowling Strret in the old Lyco building. Similar to The Lost Trades Expo at Kneton and written up in glowing terms by
John R. Perhaps someone could take a couple of pics and write
A story for Ron !!

KITCHEN UPGRADE

The kitchen upgrade is progressing. Andrew C had great pleasure in ripping out all the shelves and Len C took to the wall with hammer and saw to make a new doorway. The plan is that the existing kitchen door will be permanently closed and the new entry will be through the quiet room ( which will be the new pantry ). It is planned to set up the kitchen – see how it works – and make any changes before the final set up. We also need to slope and tile the floor, allow a drainage point, install a hands free sink plus insulate and close off most of the store room window.  It is intended that the kitchen will be for kitchen staff only and we will make provision in the rec room for members who wish to heat a meal etc.

 JOB READY SCHEME

Work has started a bit earlier than planned and not a full team yet. The committee has appointed Allan Davies as the paid supervisor. Allan has the skills and background suitable for this role and being a BECS member we know he will have our interest at heart. The guys have undertaken some yard clean-up, put the back fence posts in and started work on the floor and walls in the back room ( Maurices old flat ).
Future jobs include a front fence, lowering the rec room roof and work on nissen hut to install partition wall and move the market location. There are two Job Ready groups. Group 1 will comprise 15 men working from Monday to Wednesday and Group 2 of 15 people will work on Thursday and Friday. We are planning for inside jobs for the wet weather.

WORKSHOP

I don’t have much to report this month as  we have been hit hard with illness and people off on holidays , including overseas cruises. Lynton R has finished a mantlepiece , Graham M continues to work on furniture and a member who I didn’t catch is building a bench seat.

Above photo is “ hands of time “ and is what you could expect to see at the old trades exhibition. At its highest level its called wood carving and at its lowest level its called whittling. Ask Len C where his piece fits !
Last photo is a load of firewood for the shed. I needed a photo for balance.

FROM THE COMMITTEE

We have applied for a grant from Suez Environmental to replace the front fence.
We have applied to Springfest for a grant for tools and equipment.

PLEASE NOTE….   THERE WILL BE NO COMMUNITY MARKET IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER DUE TO WORKS IN THE NISSEN HUT. We plan to send all the market material to auction to clear space for building works to then move the metal machining and metal fabrication areas. This may cause some short term inconvenience but please look to the long term benefits.

EXTRA OPENING HOURS

It has been agreed that we open on Wednesdays from 9 – 12.30 for a trial period. Depending on participation the committee will determine whether this becomes permanent
THANKS   Two Committee members are not standing for re-election. David Paton is a founding member of BECS and held the Secretary’s position for 9 years. Thanks David for this huge contribution and hope it will allow you more time in the workshop, the guitar and art groups.
Ken Pryor joined the committee in January 2009 after a couple of years in the woodwork area. All the wooden furniture we make are from Ken’s designs. Ken took charge of the woodwork area until health issues have forced him to slow down. We thank both David and Ken for their contributions over the years.
