Doug’s Report-February 2013

Sick List   - Good to see Graeme Muir back at the shed. For those of you who enjoy good health Graeme is certainly an inspiration.  Moyle Bunworth  - from Tuesday’s computer class has had a spell in hospital but is now back home. Too much walking at the swap meet Moyle!

Farmers’ Market.  Approx. $480 raised on a longer day due to Begonia Festival.

Community Market _ - Raised $380 . Included a sale made the week before but paid on Market Day so we will claim it for the market total.

IGA Supermarket and Haintz Pharmacy – These two businesses support BECS by a token scheme (IGA) and a rebate on prescriptions (Haintz).  Members and their families are encouraged to support these businesses.

Toilet Block –We are waiting for painting of the mural on the side wall. Keep your eyes open for it.

Coming Events---- We have been asked to man the gate for a Chev. Car show at Bray Raceway. To be paid of course.

Usual farmers markets, and another Cancer Research bbq at Wallace.

Rotary Raffle  -We managed to raise $512 . No winners from the Shed. Thanks to volunteers who sold tickets and particularly Denis C who did the paperwork and managed the money.

Workshop jobs –We were asked to make more potting benches for Friends of the Botanical Gardens. These have been completed in a very short time thanks to Richard and his helpers. Ron L is working on some pens (turned on the lathe of course), Glen T. has completed some more clocks including a mirror one, and John, Neale and Doug have completed alterations on the bike racks, so now the bikes can be locked in. Graham M is multiskilling and building high chairs, Graham S is struggling to be able to laquer the toys before it dries on the brush at the moment. Many more workshop jobs underway but these are the ones I noticed walking through. Richard has volunteered to do some woodwork with Pinarc and Barry will assist where he can. Barry has also been busy making tops for display trolleys for a business down the street.

Goldacres Field Days – Catering  at Lake Burrumbeet went very well over 2 days. From all reports Goldacres are happy, and they should be as they made a number of sales. Thanks to the volunteers - your efforts will raise over $1000 for BECS.

Veterans Affairs – We were asked to talk about the men’s shed in relation to veterans and their health issues.  Prof. Barry Golding also spoke and gave us a good rap!  We gave an invitation for veterans to call in at any time as many were from regional Victoria.

Nissan Hut roof repair – On hold for the moment due to the hot weather. It is planned to get a bobcat to clear behind the shed. The Begonia float has meant it has been difficult to clear the back shed, but now this is over we should be able to get on with the job.

Ballarat Cycle Classic - BECS members who volunteered for the Cancer Research Cycle Classic were invited to breakfast at the refurbished Jackson’s.  Total result raised was $246,000. BECS has received a certificate of appreciation which is on the noticeboard, and the BECS volunteers will receive individual certificates.

New Members  - We have had a number of new members join in recent days.  Please make them welcome and get to know them. Many have interesting stories to tell.

Wobbly Boot Festival – Ray and Marj., John and Eileen, and Ron catered for this event a couple of weeks ago. It is a street party with bands etc.. Great job guys as they had also done the bbq for the Farmer’s Market at the Lake!

Begonia Parade – Fortunately we were able to pick up the trailer early from Ballarat Trailer Hire (thanks guys). Ron, Len, Tom , Ray and Bernie managed to put the float together on Thursday which meant we didn’t have to finish it on Friday. The Parade went well, except for standing in the hot sun. I don’t know how the kids coped with the masks in the heat. John and Eileen’s grandchildren Andrew and Riley helped out, as well as Ruby and Amos Moore. I believe our float received an honourable mention  in the Mayor’s award. Thanks to everyone who got us there and represented BECS in the Parade.

Tony Farmilo – Tony has resigned as Treasurer. The Board has asked John Van Muyen to take on the treasurer’s job for the remainder of the financial year. John has been a great help so far with the banking, accounting processes and handling emails and finding out info. for us.  Thanks John for helping us out of a difficult spot, and we also thank Tony who has been on the Board for several years.

AMSA National Conference in October – If BECS members are considering attending this conference (and we would encourage you to attend) you may want to start putting aside money for the fees.  I don’t have the figures yet but will let you know next month. BECS can also contribute to one of the open sessions and we will submit a paper for this.

Art Classes – Are back in action on Mondays 1-3.30pm. For more info. see Len Cooper.

Music Group – Is on Thursdays 10-12. If you would like to learn to play “Under the Boardwalk” then come along with your guitar.

Car Accident – I am so thankful to all the guys who bring me to the shed and take me home safely (not as per this photo, taken looking out from  my driveway) !!
